Hi Olds Fans,  I have a 1996 LS 88.  Sweet car, 115k on it.  Runs
perfect but I am noticing a bucking when going into 4th (OD Gear) at 45
MPH & trying to accel to highway speeds.
Seems like the engine is not reving enough & the car starts to buck
because the rpms drop from going into 4th.

If I toss the shifter back down to Drive. the revs come up & it
accelerates with no bucking issues.

What could this be?

not sure if it is the same type of tranny or not, but i had an '86 olds 88
that had the 3.8 HO, with the 4 speed tranny.

when it got to about 105k miles, i noticed a weird "bucking" sensation that
started at highway speeds.

about 3k miles later,  I lost 2nd and 4th gears in the tranny and junked the
car.

It might just need a tune up.  Sometimes misfires become more
pronounced in high gear at low rpms.

I have a 2001 Aurora that had about 70K on it, doing as you describe.  Same
symptoms.  It also happened earlier at low mileage under warranty.  Problem
was a torn O ring causing loss of pump oil pressure.

Because the O ring was torn, the transmission was running at reduced oil
pressure.  This caused the situation when the torque converter went to lock
up as it is supposed to do, there was not enough oil pressure to hold the
converter in lockup mode.  The chatter or vibration was not misfiring of the
engine undr load as I suspected but the torque converter locking up and
unlocking under high torque situations.

I also noticed that I could run down the highway on cruise nicely on
relatively flat ground but would get the vibration going up steeper hills.
