Alright, so I need to economize, and I used to change my own oil, why not
again?

Well, for starters, Pep Boys listed the filter as a two piece unit, selling
me just the paper filters, and not the canister.

And for enders, how on earth am I to remove that filter?  From the bottom?
From the top?

It came out through the top, but it wasn't easy, or neat, mind you.

Am I doing something wrong?  I tried to search a little but came up empty
handed.

The subject line captioned it, but it is the 6 cylinder Alero, 3.4 liter
(which ironically, according to the owner's manual, holds less oil than the
4 cylinder).  Year, 2003. I think that might be the last model year. Think.
Don't really know.

"Remove the plastic cover underneath and you can reach the oil filter that
way and bring it down without spilling to much oil."

Thanks to Bjorn from Canada.

Is this a long narrow piece that runs the width of the engine area?

Yes, if you jack the car up properly, you will see a plastic piece connected
via two wing nuts. Very easy to do.

Now, you know.
