I have a 91 Olds 98 that has a engine noise on pulley side of engine,
sounds like a clacking, when I raise the rpm the noise goes away, @
idle the noise is there.  When I accelerate hard I get a loud crack
then the clacking comes back.  I thought I found the problem (belt
tensioner), replaced tensioner did not get ride of noise.  Car is not
overheating,power steering is fine,alt puts out 13.2 volts,belt does
not come off.  Noise seems to be much louder when I listen down at the
ground.

Mileage 132000,3.8 V6

Any ideas of what to look for?

Thanks
Ross

Run it for a few minutes without the belt, could be the timing chain or the
crank balancer is coming apart, both common issues.

Thanks for the help I did find the noise it was the harmonic balancer
that pulled apart

Thanks again

What a coincidence.  My harmonic balancer JUST went out on my 88 delta
88 royale.  Except...mine was literally in a couple of pieces, held
together only by the belt.  You may want to check your spark plugs for
damage...having the harmonic balancer go can throw off timing, and
cause problems with the valves.
