Some other questions as well, but first the cruise. I just got a 87 delta
88 royale from an uncle. I know he was the 2nd owner and he and the
previous owner took good care of it, it only has 76K miles on it currently.
3.8v6 Anyway while the garage has called the cruise third party it really
does not look it. The control is integrated into the wiper and turn signal
stalk, and the mountings within the engine bay look stock as well. Anyway
the cruise "works" it will hold the car at speed but it feels like it is
doing it by flooring it then coasting repeativly. Does anyone know of a
way to fix this or at least check the problem?
Also the dipstick calls for dextron 2, is it detrimental to use dextron 3
or are they the same thing?
It has no drivablity problems but the engine idle is a little rough and
sometimes it seems to be missing a bit, I know the plugs have been changed
and I was wondering if there was any obvious thing I might check. I know
the O2 sensor is in good working order and it has within the last few
months passed the computer checks and such after having a control module
replaced(I need to check the recipts again but my uncle had them from
everything he did).
Thank you
T.C.
Modern Dexron fluid is considered a desirable substitute for previous
iterations of the fluid.
As for the cruise, I'm assuming the cruise system (whether OE or
aftermarket) uses a vacuum bellows (servo) linked by a chain or rod to
the throttle arm. The servo's vacuum input would be modulated by a transducer (usually
mounted on the driver's fenderwell in OE installs) that receives a speedo cable in from
the trans and another cable out to the gauge cluster.
If this describes your system, my first guesses include: bad vacuum
lines, kinked speedo
cable, wrong speedo cable, bent cable tip, bad speedo gearset in trans
tailshaft (is the speedo reading stable?), or binding somewhere in the
throttle/servo linkage. Beyond that it may be time to test the
functionality of the transducer and its electrical connections.
Before delving into transducer/electrical diagnosis, be *certain* you are
dealing with OE equipment. Compare your cruise parts to other 88s with
known OE systems if necessary. If the cruise is third party as your
dealer asserts, it's very possible that nothing is wrong and you just
have a piece of crap "on/off" setup (i.e., JCWhitney special).
As for poor idle, driveability issues related to the emissions and ECM
systems can be quite frustrating to chase on these cars, particularly if this is
an E4MC/E (computer controlled) QuadraJet setup (I don't think TBI was available on that application).
Before looking into
that, it is advisable to do/check the standard stuff: change your
filters, check the distributor cap/rotor, plug wires, vacuum leaks (*very
common) either via rotten/misrouted hoses or bad intake/carb gaskets or worn throttle
shafts, etc. Maybe run a compression test to make sure the longblock is okay.
Perhaps the carb should be rebuilt...the list goes on.
Best of luck...

Thank you for your information. Oh, 3.8L V6, MFI and distributerless. As
far as I can tell its fully computer controlled. But thank you.

Whoops, 198*7*, crap. Yeah, I was thinking of the fullsize B-body. That sucker
woulda probably had a 307 and either TBI or a computer carb. So no, it
won't be nearly as much a PITA to chase driveability. Still check for
vacuum leaks, and assure all the weatherpack connectors are tight, try a
little TB cleaner down her throat for starters. With any luck the idle
bypass is just gunked up. I don't believe I've ever poked at the CC
setup on your car; my info could be completely misleading. Apologies.

As far as the weird operation of the cruise control, in addition to
what has been previously said (binding servo, etc), check out the
vacuum hose that goes from the cruise servo (you'll find it right
under the MAF sesor mounted to a bracket on the fender) to the vacuum
pipe assembly behind the throttle body./. Those hoses take a beating
from engine heat and they may "look" fine but can end up porous as a
piece of swiss cheese (been there, done that on my 87 Olds 98).
First thing I'd check for the rough idle is air leaks. Actually, if
the cruise control hose is leaking, IT could be the cause of the bad
idle! Anyway, check the hose between the MAF and the throttle body for
possible craks and leaks, the fitting of the pipe to the valve cover
(PCV air intake) and the hose to the PCV valve (in the intake manifold
between the #1 and #3 fuel injector). Any air that gets into the
engine past the MAF sensor the computer cannot "see" and will have
problems compensating for it, which can cause a bad idle.
When all is said and done, do NOT expect the 3.8L in that car to idle
as smooth as a later balance-shaft 3.8L or a V-8 - it ain't going to
happen. Even with an even-fire crankshaft, a 90 degree V-6 has some
natural unbalance that will affect the idle (why do you think GM put
the balance shaft in the 1988 and later 3.8s?). The 3.8 in the 86 and
87 models is somewhat of a "transistion" model - has most of the nice
goodies like MPFI, DIS and a roller cam but lacks that final item -
the balance shaft, that makes the 3,8L such a nice engine.
