1997 Olds Cutlass Supreme, I hear this "click-click" noise coming fro
under the dashboard or perhaps the firewall area - like it's above th
pedals under the dash. It's driving me nuts! "click, click-click, click
every time I step on the brake. What the heck is it? Anyone have hints ou
there? There is no brake lights lit on the dash - no ABS or brake light
I'm stumped. How about you?
Thanks for any guesses out there.

It might be time to inspect/replace your brake switch. It may be out of
adjustment or is going bad.
Don't some vehicles have a shift lock solenoid? You have to have your foot
on the brake in order to shift out of park. That solenoid might be in the
area from which you're hearing the click.
Could be cruise control related, but I don't see any solenoids on the
schematic for a '98 Cutlass.
You could pull the ABS fuse long enough to find out if the clicking goes
away.
Other fuse to try for a short period: cruise control
If still no clues then you could start pulling nonessential system fuses one
at a time to find out what circuit your clicker is on.

Thanks to "Silver Surfer" for the advice on the clicking noise under th
dash on "97 Cutlass Supreme. Some people are telling me that it's the AB
modulator that is on the blink, I mean click.
They're telling me that it's gonna be around $2000 to replace th
modulator if that is the problem. YIKES!
Someone else told me it may be the speed sensor on a wheel. If so
wouldn't the ABS light be glowing?
I'm scratching my head here.

I don't believe it is the "ABS modulator" because it is under the hood not
under the instrument panel.
It's not likely to be a wheel speed sensor either. I agree with you that
the ABS light would be lit if a wheel sensor was on the fritz.
You will need to either do some experimenting per my earlier suggestions or
crawl up under the instrument panel and lay hands and eyes on whatever is
clicking.

Pin pointing vague noises in this environment is all guesss work, someone
familiar with this type of problem should road test the car for a proper
diagnosis.
