I have a 2000 Intrigue 3.5 l. The trouble is when it's cold out the
power goes on and off as if the alternator is kicking on and off. The
alternator was checked and found to be O.K. A friend of mine has the
same year and make and his does the same thing. This auto must be prone
to this problem. Can anyone give me an idea as what would cause this?
Thank you.
The problem is your A.I.R. pump cycling on and off, which can draw up to 90
amps momentarily as it cycles on. There are several TSB's (service
bulletins) on the subject which you can find on the web or have any GM
dealer look up for you. The "fix" is an updated alternator which makes the
power on/off less noticeable, but GM is not likely to install one free of
charge since this is really a nuisance rather than a malfunction. In other
words, its not a big deal, just live with it.

Did this problem get fixed before the 2002's came out?

There was a production change to the alternator's voltage regulator circuit
in mid 2001 which made the problem much less noticeable. By the way, this is
a "car line" problem that also applies to many Impalas, Regals, and GP's.
