My mother has a 1989 Olds 98 Regency with 160,000 miles on it.  The timing
chain is going out as per her mechanic and I do not know that much about
this.  He is saying that it is going to cost $700.00 to change as he has
to take off the front fender and hood to get access to the engine to do
this.  I just want to know if this is the case.  This has been a great car
to her, it has no rust and still looks brand new.  However, putting that
much money into a 1989 car, would it worth it?  Please let me know...

Don't have that car, but transverse V6 engine are miserably hard to work
on. I'm not shocked by that quote. It does sound like the book rate.
Maybe get another quote.

For reference, the dealer wanter $550 to replace the timing chain cover
gasket on my Taurus. I suppose it would have been $700 to do the chain.
I put on the $20 gasket myself, but that's hard to get to. Took me like
12 hours. Of course, a mechanic experienced in the area would do it in 4
or 5. That's how the shop and mechanic make the real money.

Also, typical for these jobs is to remove the fender _liner_ which is
the plastic behind the tire. Remove the hod? Don't quite get that.
