'98 Olds Achieva - What to look for...

I'm looking for a first car for my teenage son, and found a 1998 Olds
Achieva, which is in our price range. It has 101,000 miles, and the
only cosmetic flaw is a small paint chip on the hood. She just
replaced the battery and drive belt. Interior and tires are in great
shape, engine compartment is clean (no obvious leaks/sprays, etc. So
what am I missing?!?!?  I've read some posts about a plastic(?) intake
manifold... with this many miles would that still be an issue (maybe
it's been replaced??)

What else do I need to look for/ask about?  Any help would be
appreciated.

What kind of engine is in it?  The Quad 4 was a great engine, but had its
share of troubles....at 101K miles, a domestic car is not going to be in the
greatest of shape, even if it was taken great care of....my 89 oldsmobile
cutlass calais sl has 70K miles on it, and its starting to fall apart....

I have got to disagree with that last statement.... My '91 Old Ninety Eight
has 175,000 and runs great. Sure it has a few minor problems, but overall
runs great!

Olds Achieva's are noturious for cracking cylinder heads and arching off of
the ignition coil adaptation braket.
