2000 olds Intrigue noise

I have a 2000 olds Intrigue which make a loud noise when frist started
and at times when driving. The sound is like a siren gasping for air.
The noise is coming from the left front and seems to be under the top
items. We have been told this is normal but it did not make this sound
when new and seems to be getting worst. Anyone have any ideas? Mileage
102000.

I wonder if it's the ABS pump being tested. The test is performed
after strating up when the car reaches 10MPH or so.

Also when the ABS is activated in any hard braking, the pump will
cycle again to pressurize the traction control.

I don't think so. The noise comes on during start-up and last about 15
to 20 seconds. The RPM's are also higher, about 1200 rpm during this
time. After it turns off every thing seems normal. You can hear the
noise when driving at various speeds when not under acceration or
decelration. The sound when strating is loud enough that it is hard to
talk in a normal voice next to the car. It seems to be coming from
some of emision control canisters.
