Experiencing off and on operation of the digital dash cluster of a 1990
Cutlass Supreme. When the gas low fuel light comes on, the gas gauge and
speedometer and odometer function, but then upon putting fuel in the tank
all of the above do not luminate. GM dealerships say, replace the full
digital dash cluster which is an expensive rebuilt unit. I am questioning,
is this a wiring problem, such as corroded contacts as related to the
quantity sensing device in the fuel tank that does this. If so, please
reply as to experience upon cleaning contacts or the necessity of replacing
the full dash digital cluster ($$$?).

Anytime I've seen a weird condition like yours with the cluster, the cause
has always been the cluster.
When these things were introduced, they were to be more accurate, more
reliable, and less expensive than their analog counterparts. One out of
three (maybe) ain't bad, right?

I have a '90 Cutlass Supreme International w/ digital cluster and I have
never had a problem with it (~225K miles) so I'm not much help. If you
need to replace the cluster, I would go to a junkyard. The odometer may
not be correct (i.e.; it may give the reading from the former car), but
it has to be cheaper than buying one from the dealer. -PapaRick
