1989 Olds V6 Vin code "C" engine help

I have a 1989 Olds V6 Vin code "C" 3800 engine. If  the timing gears break
will the pistons crash into the valves? Should the timing gears be replaced
as a maintenance item? This is not a type I or type II engine.

it shouldnt depending on the rpm. you should change the timing belt/chain
every 50k to 60k
