1998 Intrigue: How do you lock out...

the trunk?

Here's a dumb question.  I have a '98 Intrigue, it came with two remotes,
two black-topped keys, and one regular metal key.  When they sold it to me
(used), I was told that the black-topped keys were the masters and open and
close everything and start the engine, but the metal one would only start
the engine(and maybe open the doors - I don't remember if they specifically
said so).  The point of all this is that you can put your valuables into
the trunk and give the valet only the metal key so he can't get into the
trunk or the glove compartment.

Now, here's the problem.  All three keys open and close every door and
start the engine, and I can't find any way of overriding the trunk open
button on the dashboard.

I can't find anywhere inthe manual that talks about this, and no one at the
dealership(Oldsmobile, if you can believe it) knows how to do this.  If
anyone has any insight, I'd love the hear it.

Thank you in advance.

Well, does it really matter?  If it's like my 99, then the rear seat folds
down as 1/3 or 2/3 to access the trunk.  I also have a dash button to
open the trunk.

Be that as it may, my Intrepid (I know, a different manufacture) has a
'valet' key that looks IDENTICAL to the main ignition key with one
small difference.  The blank the key was cut from is different.  One of
the grooves up the side of the key is different, keeping the key from
being inserted anywhere but the ignition key and I think the drivers
door.  But then, a smart thief who gets that key can just copy it onto
the standard Intrepid blank and now you have a 'real' full-feature key.

Check to see if there's a lock-out switch on the trunk latch.

There's not.  There's a strange black lever there, but it doesn't do
anything apart from moving.  There was a big huge red switch on the latch
of my Olds Achieva that did that trick, but nothing like that on the
Intrigue.

I think it cannot open only the glove box...

All three keys open every lock on the car.

Intriguing isn't it. These cars come with the two types of keys you listed
for no apparent reason. They do not have a "valet" option. Apparently you
ran into that most rare individual, the dishonest used car salesperson.
Later models mention this in the owners manual, probably because they had a
lot of questions from owners.

Ah.  Well, I think that probably explains it.  See, nobody would tell me
so.  All the responses I ever got from the dealer were variations on "We
don't know how to do this, but we're pretty sure it's possible."
