88 Delta 88 Stalls-hesitates-surges TCC switch or tranny filter?

I have an '88 Delta 88 with 155K miles, original engine and tranny as far as
I know (bought used 3 years ago). One day last week, I drove a short
distance, parked in a parking lot so I could look up a phone number, and the
idle got real rough for a second and then stalled. The car started again,
but with the yellow "service engine soon" light on. It's now been idling
rough, stalls often when idle, and the service engine light is intermittent.
It also "hesitates" then "surges" whether freeway or city driving. I took it
to a guy who  replaced my fuel filter. He said my EGR valve was probably OK,
and checked the alternator which was OK. I put a bottle of Heet in the gas
tank but it didn't help, before the fuel filter was replaced, as I thought
maybe the recent fill up may have been bad gas. After he replaced the fuel
filter and road tested it, he told me he thinks either my tranny filter is
plugged or the TCC switch is bad. He says the hesitation and surges have
more to do with it trying to shift. (locking up?) I'm taking it to a tranny
shop tomorrow. Does this diagnosis sound right? Thanks much.

Has anyone read the OBD codes yet ?? 10 to 1 it is the EGR. A
piece of carbon has blocked it open, causing the symptoms you
describe.

Hi Reed, I had the car sitting at a tranny shop, so it would be there early
in the morning, when I got your reply. They just called me and said it's not
the tranny, and they think it is or related to the mass air flow sensor, or
something affecting that system, and that it's running rich, and something
about O2, and uneven voltage? I asked about the EGR valve, they said that
didn't seem to be the problem, but since it was in a tranny shop, I'll need
to take the car elsewhere to get worked on. Thanks for the reply. The tranny
guy said I'll need someone pretty sharp to diagnose this, any ideas? Thanks
much.

You need to have the OBD codes read. The code that turned on the
"SES" light should pinpoint the area of concern. My money is on
EGR first, MAF 2nd, o2 sensor 3rd.

Aren't there any independent shops in your area ? I would have
thought the tranny guy had a buddy he would recommend. If all else
fails, take car and wallet to a dealer shop.

Hi Reed, the guy told me about a shop a couple blocks away, but I may take
it Thursday to a shop where my brother takes his. The tranny shop did do a
diagnostic I found out when I went to pick-up the car, and what they put on
the paper was:

"Code 34 MAF sensor or circuit low
exhaust rich
02 Cross Counts - 0 at idle"

The place where I'll probably take it will run their own diagnostic they
said, they won't go by someone else's diagnostics. Thanks again. I reposted
my question a little earlier.
