I have a 1999 Olds Alero. 6 cyl.
The problem I am having is that when I shut my drivers side door it locks on
it's own! This has yet to leave me locked out as the remaining three doors
stay unlocked! What is causing the door to lock? Any ideas?

I'm not an expert, nor do I keep up on Alero problems, but logically it
sounds like the mechanism is broken and it's a mechanical problem rather
than electrical, that's assuming that it locks upon shutting the door (not
the same locking like after you put it in gear). If you're too cheap to take
it in, you could see if you can pop the panels and maybe lubricate it. Order
and replace a part maybe. Could just be a spring rusted away or something.
Does the manual lock level feel the same way as the other doors?

Do you think that the wiring to the driver's door could be damaged such that
a door lock wire and a hot wire are making contact with one another when the
door swings closed?

Maybe, I've heard Alero has some electrical problems. My speedo goes up to
140mph while the engine stutters, about once every couple months. The engine
is controlled by the electrical system. I think about your situation each
time I get out of my running car and close the driver's side door to unload
my jetski at the boat ramp. If that starts happening to my '99 Alero, I'd be
stuck there at the ramp with the engine running, and blocking the ramp for
other people. I think I'll carry an extra key with me in my wallet.

Let us know if you find anything.
