I recently acquired a 1976 Cutlass and when my gas tank gets a bit low, the
gauge will show me as having maybe a 1/4 or 1/2 tank but, when I start the
car, it drops down to E or less. Can anyone tell me (without me running
myself out of gas to test this) which reading I should trust? Being a
college student, it's not always easy to find that $5-10 to put in my gas
tank before the next paycheck.
Thank you.

Easy to figure out. Next time top off the tank and work back from the
capacity. It's like 21 gallons, IIRC! Yeah that might be $40, but at
least it'll ready to drive for a while.

Does your vehicle have a trip odometer. My daughter also has a flaky fuel
gauge, and she fills it up after 300 miles. In my opinion she could
actually get more miles, but she's a girl you know.

Hehe, well, I found the answer to this one the hard way. On the '76
Cutlass, or at least mine, the correct fuel gauge reading is the lower one
that you get when you start the vehicle. Yep, you guessed it, I ran out of
gas on my way home from work this morning. /smack
