My 2000 Alero some trouble. I have had the car for just about one year and
the heater and AC have never worked on the two lower speeds. My rear window
defogger doesn't work either. After reading some of the posts here it seems
to me that there is some elecrical issues with this car. I have tested my
rear window defogger relay, fuses and switch which all seem to be fine,
there is just no power getting thorugh to the wire at the rear. I can hear
the relay click when I turn it on.  has anyone had similar problems or knows
if there is a disconnect that may be unplugged.  temperatures are dropping
here and I would like to have my rear defroster working soon.

Thanks

My girlfriends '00 Alero has the exact two problems.

1st, the fan controlls - rather easy fix.  There is a resistor under
the dash that needs to be replaced.  I don't have much more detail
on it other than that. I didn't have time to look into it, and it
was fixed by a shop.  I want to say it was a ballast resistor,
but might be confusing it with an component with old 60's ignition
systems.

2nd - the rear defogger.  There is a black box hidden under the
passenger rear 'sail' panel that I've been told is the culprit.
I've been meaning to look into it, but totally forgot about it
during the summer months that just passed us.  I'm sure I'll get
a complaint filed within the next few weeks with the cold weather
back. ;)

My '99 alero had the same problem with the airconditioning and they replaced the whole air controller panel (mine is under warranty).  Although, i did not have the problem with the rear window defogger...its always been working.
