I am working on a 1985 olds. 98.  this car has been a nightmare to
diagnos.  It will start and then stall.  at times it will idle if I
feather the gas.  I have changed the fuel pump, filter, regulater and
position sensor.  I have also changed the timing chain and gears, spark
plugs and ignition switch.  I have checked for vacuum leaks and had the
coil checked.   Any ideas?  By the way this car has a 3.8 ltr.  and is
fuel injected

How about the injectors themselves?

how wod I check the injectors?
Silver Surfer - 21 Jan 2005 16:11 GMT
One check would be to listen to each one of the injectors using a rod or
something that acts like a stethoscope to listen to each of the injectors
while the engine is running.  You should be able to detect a regular click
every time the injector opens.  The trick here is to not get yourself
tangled up in something that is moving while checking.

If they are all clicking properly then it's possible that one or more of
them could be dirty.  Trying one of those injector cleaner products in the
gas tank would be worth a try in hopes of avoiding the more expensive
solution of replacing the injectors.

Hope you don't mind me jumpnig in this thread, but I have a 1986 Olds.
98 and have had just about all the problems you've had with yours.
I've recently had to have a new ignition switch put in. I've changed the
alternator, timing belt, battery, and spark plugs mysef.  I did that
when it died on me and the battery went dead one day.   It's been
running good for awhile.  But last night I started slowly losing volts
again.  I just put the alternator in two months ago. The battery is new
too.  I'm no mechanic and have very little experience working on cars.
So changing the alternator by myself was a major accomplisment for me.
Thank god it was on the top and very easy to get to.

Anyways, the reason I'm here is to ask if anyone knows, do the 98's have
voltage regulators? And if so where would it be? Do you think I could
have a bad voltage regulator?  Or could it be that the alternator I put
in went bad already?  Or could it be something else I havn't even
thought of?

TIA

I'm fairly confident in saying that your alternator has an internal
regulator.  Does your machine have a serpentine belt driving the alternator
or is it a conventional v-belt?  Either way the belt tension may be
inadequate thus making it slip on the alternator pulley.
