Hi all - New to this newsgroup and I bet I came to the right place.

Just bought a 1991 Cutlass Supreme, with a 3.1L V6, nice shape only 95,000
miles.  I want to drive it as my daily driver.  Runs great, but the "service
engine soon" light comes on after it is warmed up and driven at highway
speeds.  It continues to run just fine when the light is on.  I am told it
is the EGR valve.  I have replaced the exhaust system include the
cataclysmic converter.

The repair shop gave me a price of some $500 to replace the EGR valve!  Holy
bucket seats!

I just bought a shop manual on E-Bay and it isn't here yet.

Can someone tell me where the EGR valve is located, what is involved in
replacing or cleaning it?

Also, they said the intake gasket is leaking but only externally.  And not
much at that.  Is this anything I need to address right away?

Any advise is sure appreciated!

I just priced a new EGR valve for a ;91 Bonneville 3800 engine and it was
well over $300 brand new. I ended up going with one from a local wrecking
yard for $30. :)

On that Chevy, the part is 397 bucks. The labor is 0.5 hours. That means the part is the expense. In most cases a vacuum line is off, but the shop charges you for the part, anyway. You will need to check the lines to and from the EGR. The EGR looks like this:
