I have a 1992 Olds Cutlass Ciera S with 123,000 miles on it.
Twice today, I had a certain problem. As I was turning, the engine
began to sputter and the car ran very roughly. It seemed to jerk
forward as it moved. Then the engine died.
I was able to start the car with no problem, but when I put it into
drive or reverse, the engine died. I waited about 10 minutes, and then
started the engine again, put it into drive, and the car worked fine.
There were no strange odors or colored exhaust.
Does anyone have any idea what this problem could be? Any help would
be appreciated. Thanks!

If you have an automatic transmission, the torque converter control
solenoid, which locks up the torque converter when you drive faster
than 40 to 50 mph, is not disengaging at lower speeds. It eventually
disengages when the car is turned off after a while. Until it does,
the car will stall at low speeds. It needs to be replaced, or if you
can't afford to do that, you can have your mechanic disconnect the
electrical connector leading to it so that it never engages. This will
result in slightly lower gas mileage on the highway, and your check
engine light will always turn on a few minutes after starting the car
each day.
