i have an 84 cutlass supreme and I'm not sure how to tell if it has the
chev 305 or the olds 307 engine.  I'm also looking for a used transmission
for it and I'm wondering if anyone knows what other models of vehicle
around that year would have the same tranny or just which different ones I
could use on that car.

Simplist way is by looking at the oil fill. If it's through a tall
tube at the front of the engine, it's a Olds 307. If it's through the
valve cover, it's a chevy.

The factory would have put in a THM200, which was used in many models
except for station wagons and some of the full size cars. If you're
planning on keeping it for awhile, a 350 is a bolt-in and much more
durable. Which ever you get, make sure it has the bolt pattern to
match your engine.
