I know nothing about cars, but I know that mine started leaking coolant
today from a 1 1/2 in. (approx.) hose that connects from the engine block
to the radiator (I think). It appears as though a tear developed in the
hose when another hose vibrated against it and slowly ripped it open.

What is this hose called?
How much does it cost as a part?
About how much will it cost to repair (I'd prefer not to fix it myself)?

Is this the upper hose (on the driver's side of the engine compartment)?

If it's the upper radiator hose it shouldn't cost much more than $12-15.
Labor should not be all that much either.  Should be able to do the work in
less than an hour.  Plus maybe a little lost coolant during the fix.

Yep, it was the upper radiator hose, but it was a pain to fix (for a hose).
I had to remove the air hose to get to it, and then I had to twist my arm
into a really awkward position to remove the clamp attached to the engine,
seeing as how I had to use pliers to clamp it open. The end attached to the
radiator wasn't much better, as I had to unscrew it sideways. After I
finally got the hose on, I filled up the coolant tank with antifreeze, and
like an idiot, immediately drove to the nearest Arby's.

I am an idiot.

It took me a while to figure out that the engine was overheating because it
needs more coolant than a single tankfull to operate. Fortunately, I didn't
let it get too hot before I added some more and let it circulate.

Well it was good experience for you anyway in spite of the typical
aggravation that you encountered along the way, and the ultimate outcome was
favorable.  Take a bow.
