Yesterday my 92 Olds 88 just freaked out on me, and I am at a loss for
what the problem could be.  I was driving along at ~40mph and all of
the sudden the security and inflation rest. warning lights came on,
the temp, speedometer, and fuel needles started going all over the
place, and the warning sound for the key in ignition when the door is
open/seat belt started going off and sounded like it was flatlining.
Also, the electronics for outside temp/radio buzzed off for a second
and then came back on.  The car kept going fine, and in about 5-10
seconds the warning lights went off, the needles righted themselves,
and the radio/temp control were back to normal, however, the
flatlining noise went on until I turned the car off.  This happened
again when I restarted the car (it had been sitting off about 10min)
and started moving.

I checked the fuse box, and the applicable fuses seemed fine, except
for in one of the 15 fuses there was a 20 (that didn’t have the normal
U shaped fuse - it was a weird squiggly shape and looked newer than
the rest), so I took a spare 15 and replaced the weird looking 20.

Also, had the car sit for a while, then turned it on again.  It
sputtered for a bit before running smoothly, and then ran fine for
around  5-8 min.  At this time something dropped, there was a ping
(again sounding like a door/seat bell warning) and was fine after
that.

Any ideas?  I could use any help possible.  A friend of mine offered
to take the alternator off and have it checked.  Didn’t know if that
could be a cause.

Oh yeah, because of the location of the fusebox, (drivers side low,
left of steering column) I tend to accidently kick it when I get
in/out of the car.  I know that is probably a very BAD thing to do.
:(  Didn’t know if this could have possibly knocked loose some wiring,
and there may be a short anywhere.

Again, any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!  Thanks!

My Olds '98 of the same year does the same thing when the alternator is
beginning to puke.  Test the alternator first.

After that, it is anyones guess.

Start by check the battery cable connections and the chassis grounds.
