Hi all,

I've got a AM/FM - Stereo radio from an old 1972 cutlass I used to own.
The part # is 23AFM.
I'd like to get the wiring pinout to see if it actually works.
There is one 3-pin connector and a single blue wire with a connector
which comes out the side.
Any help out there?

Thanks

Dave

Can you make out any letters on the connectors?  My 1972 Pontiac manual
shows a lot of radio connections that are probably similar to your machine.

Power will be on terminal C
Dial lighting lamp will be on terminal B
Front speaker goes to terminal u (its other terminal is grounded)
Rear speaker wires on terminals v and x
Radio chassis is the ground return

Silver,
Thanks for the info, but i believe the pinouts that you gave me are for
the mono radio.
The one connector with three terminals, one is labeled GND(left) the
other is labled spkr(center) and the other label is gone(right).
There is a single blue wire coming out from the side of the radio.
Check your other wiring diagrams for this possible combination.
I really don't want to blow up the thing since it looks like it is in
good original shape.

Cheers

Dave

Silver,
Check for this pontiac part number
22afm
2 - is the year
2 - is pontiac, 3 would be an oldsmobile
a - is for "A" body
fm - FM Stereo.
Tks

Took another look at my manual.  There are no codes like the one you
provided for reference.  Just a written description for each radio
installation.  The pinout I gave you was for the "stereo radio or monaural
radio with rear seat speaker."  It was for the F series Pontiacs.  The
drawing for the A and G series radio is virtually identical.  None of the
available installations for any series shows a single wire leaving the
radio.  It's hard to believe that Pontiac and Olds would be very different
in this area of the vehicles.  Any chance that your radio came from a
different year car?

Found a set of AC Delco Schematics for 1972 radios.  There is a diagram for
an Olds F85 that shows a hookup similar to the one you describe.  The three
pin connector carries power for the radio, output to the front speaker, and
ground.  There is a separate blue wire with its own connector that goes to
the rear speaker.  Evidently stereo back then meant separate audio signals
to a front and rear speaker layout, not left and right.

That sounds like the information I was looking for.
That explanation matches the description on the knobs on the radio. Just
a front/back fader.
Interesting that the rear deck has factory cutouts for the speakers.

Thanks again
