How long do GM engines last?

Hi group:

I'm thinking about buying a 1995 Oldsmobile Aurora with 150,000+ miles
and I'm wondering how many more miles will this engine last?

When I talk to mechanics in my area, they suggest that if this were a
Honda or Toyota engine, 150,000 miles would be nothing...it's just
breaking in!

...But with a GM engine with this many miles, they suggest....stay away
from this car...period.

My present car is a 1985 Cadillac Cimarron and it has about 139,000
miles and it seems to run OK.  I don't sense any weakness with this
engine (this is my third Cimarron since 1987) and insofar as I drive
only about 6,000 miles a year, I believe there are still some years
left on this car.

But with the Aurora, I'm really not sure.  :-)

The large cover on the engine of the Aurora, in small print, says,
"Built for Oldsmobile by General Motors."

What are your thoughs and experiences with Auroras, other Oldsmobiles
or other GM autos with this kind of mileage?

The Aurora uses a smaller version of the Cadillac Northstar engine, you may
want to research the Northstar and see what you find about
problems/longevity. I can tell you there are no easy accessories to get to
on this engine. As far as GM engines, all the recent ones I've owned have
been 3.1 or 3.8 6 cyl engines from 94 to 98, all have gone 175k with no
internal engine problems, yet!!!

Stick with vehicles containing a 3.1L or 3.8L.  Avoid the 2.2 and 3.4L

Im working on 180K on my 4.3L 98 S-15 Sonoma....it has only had the water
pump replaced, but gets semi-frequent tune ups and also gets routine oil
changes.....

I've got over 260K on my 3800 in my 1992 Olds Ninety-Eight.  The only
engine work that has been done in the cars lifetime is alternators, a water
pump, a tune up (at 195K, no less) and MAF.

Pretty good I'd say.

it seems like very few engines, i.e. 2.2s and the like, offer problems, but
the majority of GM engines are very sturdy, my friend who I am helping move
back to Ohio from Florida said the only problem with his car (daily driver
84 Trans Am with the 5.0L H/O 4bbl) at 210K is it has not much power....
