Pug 406 HDi 2001 Exec - Electrical Gremlins are breeding

Our 2001 406 exec has started to display some worrying symptoms. Posted
last week about indicator problems. Now the thing beeps at you, the engine
management light came on and things went from bad to worse:

1 Rev counter drops to zero revs whilst maintaining constanst speed

2 Speedo arm 'waggles' up and down

3 Odometer trips out and sets total milage back to zero (shouldn't
complain, but it does reset itself!)

4 Indicators cease to function at all

5 When turning off headlights dash, remains illuminated

It did this on Friday night, stopped car repeatedly, switched off left
for a few seconds and it seemed to reset itself. Drive on slightly further
and it started again. Mechanically the car drives as well as ever no effect
on engine or progress at all.

Took it to a mechanic on Saturday morning and he looked at the wiring
behind the dash and under the steering wheel. He couldn't however
interogate the diagnostics as he said the thing didn't have a live feed to
it. Also the steering column stereo controls haven't functioned since we've
owned the car. But since friday night (touch wood) it hasn't reoccurred
since. Maybe a loose connection, blown fuse, ecu shot to bits?

Have any of you guys had this or similar problems? Is it something I can
leave for now or would you recommend a full check over by an Auto
Electrician as I guess not having the diagnsotics working is quite a
handicap.

Bloody car, christmas less than a week away and we're trying to buy a
house in the new year, guess what we really didn't bank on?!

Thanks in advance for advice and merry chrimbo.

Wierd things like this can happen when the battery is failing.

Or even when the battery terminal connections are not all they should be.
Worth checking them.  Kinder than hitting them with a large hammer which has
also been known to work sometimes - the other times it just knocks the post
off the battery.

Hi, I'm experiencing the same problem with my 1999 Peugeot 306.  Did you ever
find the cause of that erratic behaviour?

The 306 is usually caused by a corroded snapped earth lead (from chassis to
engine)

ok for items 4 and 5 sounds definately like a comm 2,000 problem .we have
done  1,000's (its a joke to us pug technicians) .(comm 2,000 = indicator
stalk, wiper stalk all one unit) when the fault is happening to  items 1 and 2
does the fuel gauge do anything strange? i ask this because your vehicle is
multiplexed .it could be just the instrument panel if you answer no to the
question. Also  other things what can cause it are >> under drivers footwell
there are x2 connectors these corroded causing these problems due to water
ingress.also for item 3 if you have a multichanger in the boot these get
water in again and corrupt the mux signal  sending the miles funny ive seen
some with 569,456 miles on ......lol (peugeots definately aint gonna do this
mileage b4 you ask!!!) and the obvious one =poor earths which a volt drop
test will pick up easily   .A good auto electrician may help you but there
are some crap ones out there.the average mechanic is gonna be screwed.

Thanks Mark, I'll have them check the electricals again. So far the battery
has been swapped, terminals cleaned and fuses checked. To answer your
question, yes, both the temperature and fuel gauges read 0 while the
speedometer and tachometer reflect high readings and the mileage display goes
blank. The car also beeps 5 times when I take the key out of the ignition.
Thanks again, Janine

can someone help? I have a pug 406 HDi 110 estate V reg. The wipers seem to
have a mind of there own? They keep stopping. On fast wipe it will do about
15 wipes then just stop anywhere in the screen. The slower speed wipe was
doing less wipes and stopping (9ish)but now seems to keep on going. I checked
the column stalk switch and sprayed it with contact cleaner but to no avail.
Then went hunting for the relay and ended up taking the black box out and
opening it up. I thought there "may have been signs of moisture ingress (some
white corrosion like dust on back of circuit board) so cleaned is with brush
and circuit board cleaner spray and left it to dry on the living room
radiator. No better. Next I went to the scrappy and fished the black box out
of an earlier (R reg I think) 406 petrol and tried it in my car to see it the
wipers would work. Nothing worked!?! Oh well it was worth a try I said to
myself. Now  I am saying to myself it was not worth the darn try because even
with my original black box in my car has gained 12000 miles on the milometer.
DRAT and double DRAT. I have lifted the carpet on the drivers side and found
moisture so will leave it up until it is all nice and dry.
So my question is 1/ what do you think is the cause of the wiper problem and
what needs to be done to fix it. 2/ how can I get my old mileage back?
