Hello all,

I have today decided foolishly to take a look at my intermittant fan problem
and funny click, click, click, whirr sound that the recirc switch makes.
I fixed the fan issue (again), but the recirc thingy..... I took
(Eventually) the whole glovebox section out from underneath the passenger
airbag.
Found a little box on the side of the fan housing making the ticking sound,
about the size of a packet of fags.
Unscrewed this with the worlds smallest screwdriver...
Found that all of the plastic cogs have been completely shredded!
I did however find the pollen filter and replaced it with a part from GSF
car parts for ?8 inc - Bargain.

Anybody know anything about these cogs? - Do I need a new unit? - Can I get
replacement cogs from somewhere? - Is one from a scrappy likely to be much
the same?

A lot of questions, but a heck of a lot of swearing today, and yes, my
knuckles are bleeding... :)

You don't say what car you have.   My recirc motor went on my 1999 406 and I
found that a new one varies between ?80 and ?120 depending whether it is the
early model or the later one (there is also a different motor on the Climate
Control version).   I have simply left my motor off with the flap in the
open position.   Aside from the odd smelly exhaust in front it is not a
problem.    I have seen posts from people who have used, in one case cog
wheels from a Range Rover and someone else obtained model making cogs from a
model shop.   However looking inside the motor I noticed an electronic
device and wonder whether it is supposed to detect the extra load when the
flap reaches its limit of travel and shut off the motor.  If this is the
case, and it caused the problem, new cogs could quickly go the way of the
old ones.

Come the better weather I will be wandering around the breakers.

I have a 98 406 with normal A/C not climate.  I think your right, I will
just leave the motor off, I never use the recirc anyway, I'm just feed up
with the noise the stupid flap motor makes...

Maybe if I get bored one day I will wonder round the scrappy.

With regards the range rover thing, anymore info on where the cogs come
from - model, year, component etc... ??? - Maybe handy.

Its nigh on 100 quid to replace the unit....when mine went I figured I could
live without a recirc flap....its only to shut out bad smells temporarily
when you drive (for instance) past the treacle mines on the M4!). Just make
sure the flap is open, and then leave it dis-connected.

You must mean the "Treacle Mines" by junction 7 at Slough.   The other one
is the place my niece christened "Pooh Corner" at the junction of the M25
and M3, best sampled travelling around the slip road from M25 clockwise to
M3 East.

The, of course, there was the glue factory in Wandsworth "where the
smell comes from" ... though I havn't noticed it (been there) lately ...

I'd leave it. Drive cogs of Tamiya RC Cars fit great too :)

I have a good fix for the fan connector, I got hold of a very high grade
connector, the connector is some ?43 worth (No it's not stolen!) - I do some
contract work for them......

From :- http://www.fischerconnectors.co.uk/products/connectors.htm

They use these connectors on military computers and formula one cars. - They
supply formula 1 racing companies with HT leads as well - Way better than
anything you could buy at halfrauds - but they cost about ?1000 for a cheap
set I am told :(

It's probably over doing it, but they are apparently bullet-proof, radiation
proof, water proof, altitude tolerant, fireproof, heatproof, very high
tensile, self-locking, connectors..... I'll probably loose it soldering it
on!
The guys at this place tell me my (Peugot original) connector has suffered
from something called the corona effect due to poor quality, under speced,
badly fitted connectors.
They tell me that just cleaning the contacts is useless as it has now built
up a layer of carbon on the inside which it will always use to 'track' down,
hence the heat build up, similar to a cracked dizzy cap.

I will leave the recirc thingy alone, I probably will never use it if I do
fix it!!! - I'll just disconnect the motor.
