I got in my car this morning to go to work and turned on the blower to clear
the windscreen. After a while I realised that while the blower was working
that there was no heat coming through. After work driving home the needle on
the temparture gauge went to the far right, I stopped the car at a garage
and waited for things to cool down, I added some water to the radiator, I
was surprised that it only took half a litre or so. When I got back in the
car I found that the heater worked this time. I noticed when I got out of
the car that there was water dripping from underneath the car - this seems
to originate from the timing belt area.

Is this the water pump? Can I drive my car? Is changing a water pump a job
for an expert? I'm reasonably compentent with a spanner - is there somewhere
that shows me how to do it (other than a Hayners manual)?

Thanks

Nadeem

on my 405 diesel the water pump is on the cambelt side at the bottom of the
engine. but first check the hoses for splits and cracks first.

Hi Nadeem

I've done this with a friend on a 8v 406. As the water pump is driven by the
timing belt, you are well advised to replace the belt, tensioner, pulley, as
well as the camshafts/crankshaft oil seals. It's no absolutely no bother at
all to replace the water pump itself - the worst part is the timing belt :-)
Good luck
