Various issues on Peugeot 406 2.0 LX

I?ve just bought a second hand Peugeot 406 2.0i LX, 1996 P Reg.

Got some problems with it, and I?m hoping you guys can point me in the
right direction. I?m aware some of these questions have been answered
in part on other posts, but I?m also aware of the acute differences
between 406s. Sorry for the long post!

Firstly, there?s a clicking, followed by a tired motor noise. It?s
happening when the engine is running, but noticable when the car is
not moving. I understand this may be because the gears have stripped
off of the recirculation motor? If so, I again understand it?s cheaper
for me to locate this motor and just unplug it?

The speedo worked ok whilst I drove it home. I?ve been driving about
40 miles in it. Now, it will not go above 0. If I leave the car for an
hour or so it will register the correct speed, but after about 10
minutes, it drops to 0 again. Is this the sender unit or something
else? The engine performance doesn?t seem to be affected.

My odometer can only be seen in daylight. I understand this will be
the bulb. Is this easy to get to and replace? If so, is there a
particular part number and stockist I will need?

Finally, do these cars normally come with a remote locking plip? I
only got a key with the car, and I think this is an aftermarket one
(branded Silca with no buttons). If so, where can I get another one.
And does it need to be programmed to the car by a Peugeot dealer
(kerching!)? I ask because in my job I?m often carrying heavy loads
towards the car. It would be so much easier to unlock by pressing a
button!

Many thanks in advance for any help you can give.

it is easier to just unplug it if you know you wont need recirc

usually sender connector although you need to check it to be sure as senders
go down too

bulb available from peugeot dealers is a modified part number which should
blow as quickly

normally they do come with remote keys (2 of)
you need to know if you have deadlocking or single locking
dont know of anyone but dealers who can order keys for you
others here may be able to add to this comment though

Planning to unplug the recirculation motor this weekend. However
getting prices from Cit-ren etc for when I get bored one summer
weekend and have time to fix it.  Am I correct in thinking that I can
reach the motor plug from the passenger footwell in order to
disconnect it?

When you say sender connector, do you mean the unit inside the car or
on the gearbox? I?ve seen various postings that mention a box the size
of a cigarette packet that can fail.

I noticed today that there was an occasional wobble from the RPM
counter, once going to 0 and then behaving itself since. Is this
related? If it is the unit inside the car, is this reached in the same
way as the recirculation motor, or is it nearer to the drivers side?
Also, I noticed the speedo worked for about an hour today, and stayed
at 0 for the rest of the day.

I?ll get the bulb for the dashboard tomorrow. In fact, I?ll get a few
if they go regularly.

Spoke to the dealer today who quoted big bucks for replacement keys
and fobs. Only after the fob though, if that?s possible. I?m not sure
if I?ve got deadlocking or single locking. How can I check? I haven?t
got the original manual.

Thank you very much for your help.

Hold the key in the locking position for a second, you should hear the
deadlocking come on if you have it. (my car is the sane model and does).

Just been out to check, it does have the deadlock. I understand that?s
the fob with 2 buttons then?

Just need to work out what hoops to jump through with my dealer to get
a fob now. Probably want to know everything about the car, chassis
number, inside leg measurement, neighbour?s phone number, then just
give me a generic one off the shelf!

I don?t think I?ve got an alarm on this car, but not really had a
chance to check. Is there a standard Peugeot alarm for it that just
plugs in, or am I better getting an aftermarket alarm?

Yes.

Mine has no alarm. Do you have to enter a pin number for the immobiliser?

Yes, just the pin number. It?s just the immobiliser. But just wondered
if it could have the Pug alarm fitted, and if it could whether it just
plugs in somewhere.

It's not alarmed,at least looking at the schematics, mine is not.I
think they thought the second button on the fob immobilising the car
acts as an alarm.A cheap fitted one may cover the insurance as my
dealer informed my insurance it was alarmed,it plainly is not but it
is immobilised.Insurance may use it not to pay out claims so I think
I'll have a cheapo fitted.

A 1996 P reg LX 406 wont have a factory fitted alarm.

You do have the insurance approved Thatcham Cat 2 keypad immobiliser as
standard.

Dont bother with the Peugeot add on alarms, They are overpriced & you can
get a much better alarm fitted for less money.

I have brought a R Peugeot 406 2.0 LX Auto
It doesnt have a Keypad for immobiliser was the immobiliser an
optional extra Or should it of had one fitted to the car as Standard?

The Philips Radio is under a flap. There is no LCD screen is this
Normal also doesnt seem to be doing anything when I press power no
noise from speakers music or Noise. Notice the is a security code
button are you meant to press this and enter Number everytime you want
to use?

Thanks for any Help

Hi

All the U.K. spec 406s had Thatcham Cat 2 immobilisers fitted at the
factory. The early 406s had the keypad immobiliser, But being a R reg it
might have the later transponder chip in the key.

A lot of 406 have the remote keys set to unlock the keypad when pliped with
the remote & owners are sometimes unaware there new car even needs a 4
digit security code for a keypad, That is untill the battery goes flat or
gets disconnected & then the fun starts if you dont have the code.

To find out what type of immobiliser you have, Have a look near the drivers
right hand knee area on the dash, Is there a little flap that pops down? If
yes then it is keypad equipped.

The Philips radio on the higher spec 406s uses the display with the outside
temp on also next to the rear heated screen, hazard lights & heated rear
window on the centre consoul.

You shouldnt have to put the security code in ever time you want to use the
stereo, It should only ask for the code when its unplugged or the battery
is disconected / goes flat.

It sounds like the radio fuse might have blown.

Also, Press the button marked OPEN in the middle of the stereo, Does the
flap open on its own?

Thanks You

For the infomation given
Will have a look and see if I have got the flap under the drivers
side.
know dought will post more questions.

You where right about the fuse on the radio thanks for that info the fuse
fitted a 10Amp had blown (seems large to me) didnt have one to hand so put
5amp fuse wire across to see if any life wouldd appear. The radio now does
open and close the front when you press ity and also takes a tape but still
no sound. But I still dont know where the display is.There doesnt seem to be
anywhere where a display could be.

It also does have the flap that drops down on Drivers side but no keypad is
in there.Does this mean that the keyfob is activating imobiliser. The
indicators do flash when keyfob button is used to lock car.Is this an
indication that car imobiliser is armed. If battery is ever disconnected
could I have problems? or as its done by keyfob should be OK?Would like to
know before it ever happens so I can try to get Number from peugeot now
rather than later.

Thanks for any info

Hi

It sounds like you have the later transponder immobiliser key, The lack of
a keypad confirms this.

The immobiliser is armed when the key is removed from the ignition, Even if
you dont plip the car to lock it the immobiliser is armed as soon as the
key is removed from the ignition barrel.

Its all worked by magnets & a tiny chip in the key, As well as an aerial
coil ( That Peugeot moddified around october 1998 because of failures )
around the igntion barrel.

A new aerial coil is around £28 when it starts to play up & an easy diy
fittment, A couple of screws & one connector plug.

The radio you describe with a opening flap sounds like the high spec
Philips unit I had on my GLX 406, The display unit was on the dashboard
next to the 3 switches, Heated rear window, Rear fog & hazard warning.
The display unit also houses the outside temperature display.
Lee Power - 12 Apr 2005 20:43 GMT
Hi

Ive found a picture of a 406 dash with the Philips radio I think your
talking about.

Ive stuck an arrow pointing towards the display unit.

Does it look like your radio?

Do you have this disply unit fitted?

I am starting to suspect someone has just put this radio in just to
fill the whole where the radio should be.Its the philips type where
the front lifts when you press the open/close button but where you say
there should be a display there is just a holder of some kind. Next to
the hazard lights button.Where you could put small items.(Wouldnt be
very easy to get them out though).

Thanks for the picture at least I now know the radio is not the
original one as I dont have the display in the car.

Have found to stop the clicking if it bothers you.Well this stops it
in my car turn the circulate air internallly only on.This seems to
stop the clicking.
