I have a strange problem with my 306, its a 1998 1.6xs, and has recently had
the head gasket replaced because of an oil leak, it is currently on 64,000,
which is now sorted, and it doesnt leak.
The problem i have is whenever the engine is hot, or i am parked on a hill,
the engine sounds really tappety, but it is not always like this only
sometimes, it stays like this for a while.
Then some days it sounds alright, the tapping noise sounds like it is coming
from the top of the engine, it is a strange problem  as it doesnt happen all
the time.
I am using good oil in it as well Castrol Magnetec, 10w/40, as i thought this
may help, as i was unsure what oil was put in when the head gasket was done,
but after the oil, change i am getting the same rough tappety noise.

Any ideas of what this could be, or has any one expireenced this on a peugeot
before

Thanks

The obvious-- tappet adjustment.
Or a crap make of oil filter (faulty one way valve or none at all)
Or is the oil getting up to the top of the engine properly. If it has
only started since the head gasket change is the feed to the head ok
and the oil way through the head to the camshaft. Was it a genuine
gasket or at least a good make?
Anyone else got any ideas?

Yes. If it has started making the noise since the head-gasket change then
take the car back to where the work was done and get them to sort it out.

but i am sure the oil is getting alright to the top, as i have noticed the
car is only tappety when the engine is very hot, what could this mean??,
i might try and put in some thicker oil, maybe 15w 40, that may help.
