hi all. newbie here and require some help. my 406 2.0ltr petrol has
developed a problem. there is two fans on the front of the air con
rad. the drivers side is the only one working. wether i use the air
con or not?. also the temp goes right up to 105 then the drivers side
fan comes on and the temp drops. i have read the manual and it
mensions a bitron sensor. could this be at fault, checked all the
fuses no probs?.the left hand fan moves free enough also this weekend
flushed the rad out and fitted a new thermostat. new water pump 10
months ago. any help would be appreciated thanks shaun...p.s. car is a
98 model.

It should be the sensor. The temp should go to 96, fans on, drop to
92.
The 2.0i in my 605 goes up to 100 max. That happens only in the city,
during slow traffic.
Be careful, the cam heads on these motors don’t really like
overheating.

cheers mate.. so would you recommend just buying the bitron sensor?.
from peugeot. i know which one it is on the thermostat housing.so not
a bad job.shaun
p.s. just been outside and with the ignition on and unplug the bitron
sensor only the right side comes on?.

I’ve heard that Peugeot made 3 different thermostat versions,
depending on where the car was sold. The temp usually goes up to 105
and even 110 on LPGs.
But 406 people on some Pug forums say that 105 is normal in the city
or doing 170 on the freeway. Try asking a Peugeot service, if they say
it’s OK, then it probably is.
According to Vivid Workshop, the first fan (the one you saw turning)
should start turning at 93.5 (96 for aircon) and the second one should
start at 101. If the second one doesn’t work, there’s something wrong
and this is also the reason why it goes up to 105.

i've writen that many many times here,
sorry couldn't tell you right away
so let me guess the botom relay?

it is the use of different materials as copper and iron together
accompanied with some salt from wintertimes it makes a nice voltage
potential over the conector itself and starts electrical corosion the
same you get on ships hulls but then in miniature

it is bad design, you'll soon have to do the other wire in the loom.

best is to solder the whole assembly together and then spray it with a
lot of plastic spray

grrzz

It seems that Peugeot just don't understand these aspects of metallurgy.
On my 405 there is an aluminium casting holding the thermostat with a steel
pipe pressed in to take the heater hose. This had corroded through meaning
that the whole casting would have to be replaced.
Another one to look out for is the steel clips used to hold aluminium aircon
pipes in place. These clips should be removed and little sliver of plastic
or pad of insulating tape fitted to break the electrical circuit
As Marc has said this is just poor design or perhaps even a cynically placed
series of timebombs leading to needing repairs.

It is rather ironic that French scientists such as Leclanche who was
responsible for the everyday  zinc carbon batteries understood
electrochemistry in previous centuries better that Pug designers!

given pug PSA engines which are simply indestructible i wouldn't
expect pug to do such a thing.
it is just the french climate being so mild  that they seem to forget
there are many pugs that have to face salted road conditions .
given the latest 307 recall just because of that i suspect designers
should be shaken up by now :-)
they also could give the wiring contract to Phillips or Stork
engineering ( boeing, nortrop, JSF and lots of aviation subcontracts)
this would make the wire looms live out the engines and that is a very
long time......
