206 Flashing STOP light...grrrrr

I have not had my 206 W reg diesel very long and it had been fine to
drive doing long/short trips. Now every so often when I am driving
along at 50/60mph I suddenly hear a clicking/ticking (relays??) noise
behind the dash and the STOP light starts to flash for about 10 seconds
inconsistantly. Temperature is flying  up to red. Within 20 secs
everything calms down back to normal. This can happen any time between
me doing 40 miles and 700 miles!!  Have taken it to main dealer, they
kept it for 3 days and
didn't know what was wrong and guessed they should replace the green
temp sensor & blue temp sensor but couldn't guarantee that was gonna
solve it. This obviously has not worked and it's still happening every
so often. I cannot afford to go to the main dealer again for a while.
Would really appreciate a reply from anyone else who has had a pug like
this or knows what it could be.

Not really a solution here Bex but I get the same on my 406 (stop light
only though). I haven't had time to get it investigated but it seems to
happen at the same time as the fan kicks in! Because it's so intermittent
I'm not too worried about it but I will get it sorted before the winter
months. Like I say - not really a solution but good to know this is common
and therefore someone will solve the mystery, I'm sure. Sy

This is purely a guess, but could it be a faulty thermostat that is not
opening until much higher than it's design temperature, i.e. at the point at
which it kicks in the warning system after which, having opened, everything
cools again.

Do you have aircon? On my Xantia I have just occasionally had similar
symptoms which I'm fairly sure is down to a duff connection to the Bitron
sensor on the thermostat housing although my temp gauge didn't rise if I
remember correctly. I took the plugs off and cleaned them with alcohol and
switch cleaner and it seems ok now.

Hi, not a good reply here, but it seems that the BSI is getting a
"hot water" signal, because temp gauge goes up and relays click etc.
Temp sensors should be ok cos they’re replaced. Poor contacts between
sensor and BSI unit seem the most likely cause, or maybe the unit
itself. May need some time consuming voltage measurements if you know
where to look.
