I've had a 406 diesel estate for about 3 months now -- well happy with
it (it's a 1999 2.0 HDi). I now need a towbar with single electrics.
Does anyone have a view on whether it's a DIY job (I'm pretty competent
at most DIY jobs on a car including electrics, but have little
experience of the 406).
If so, any recommendations for where to buy a towbar?
If not, any recommendation where (or where not) to go to get one
fitted?

Yes, it is a DIY job - I fitted one with single electrics to my 406 estate
in about 2 hours - the only fiddly bit is fitting the nut inserts into the
chassis rails. The electrics wire in on the right-hand side of the car (As
you look in the tailgate)

Thanks Artie. You've convinced me. I'll place the order tonight and
hopefully have the part in time to fit on Saturday. I'll post again to
let you know how I get on!

Ive fitted one to my old 406 estate and last week to my 406 saloon. Piece
of cake...... Good luck.

Thanks everyone. New towbar arrived yesterday and was fitted today.
Took me nearer 6 hours than 2 -- rain-interrupted (bit like the
cricket!).
Caged nuts were a bit fiddly in the chassis as was doing up the nuts
above the silencer. But otherwise it really was straightforward.
Really impressed with the electrics. Both LH and RH indicators were in
the offside rear lighting loom, as were the fog lights (which are in
the tailgate).
Thanks for the advice. One happy 406 driver!
