Been there done that too Peter.
Strip down the rear brakes and free everything off and lubricate sparingly
with copper ease or proper brake grease, fit a new spring kit and examine
and consider replacing the short handbrake cables. The outer part of these
are plastic coated and water gets trapped inside and corrode/jam up. Almost
worth putting new shoes on whilst you are at it.

Have a good look at the wheel cylinders while you are there. They are of an
age when they have been known to start leaking. It's surprising how gunged
up they can get the rear brakes without a noticable drop of fluid level at
the master cylinder reservoir. If they need replacing, make sure you get
the right ones as there were several different types.
