306 HDI turbo question?

Hi,

I have just bought a second hand W Reg 306 2.0 HDI. I was just
wondering what signs to look for if the turbo need to be replaced.
Also how can you tell if it is a 90bhp pr 110bhp model. Its the 3 door
model if that helps.

There seams to be a high pitched noise when the car is started, it
sounds like it is come from the engine, could this be the turbo?

Any ideas? Also as I have just bought that car can you suggest
anything else I should check before driving it regularly.

My 406 is shown on the log book as an HDI 110. With 406's, built after a
certain date, whether it is a 90 or 110 actually affects the amount of road
tax you pay. I don't know if that is true of the 306.

You give no indication of mileage, and unless it is extremely high, I doubt
whether the turbo will be at fault.
There might be a sticker on either the A or B pillar, driver side which says
HDi 90 or 110. Also the 110 engine has an intercooler between the turbo and
inlet manifold. Don't know where this is on the 306, probably alongside the
main radiator at the front.
Is the high pitched noise only when you start up? If so it could well be the
alternator belt is a bit loose, and slipping.
Turbo whine, if you can hear it, will be directly linked to engine speed,
and will only be there at higher revs. But it will always be there at those
revs, so if it really is only there when you start up, chances are it is
something else.

It's a 306 HDi 90bhp: a stock 306 HDi with 110bhp does not exist!

You can easily chip the 90bhp block to that power though (and beyond with
an aftermarket intercooler).
