I don't know what the manufacuter says but my local peugeot specialist says
that if it has done 60000 standard running it should be changed, if it has
done stop/start running it should be changed at 40000. Or if it is 5 years
old.
I had mine changed at 45000 I also had to have the three guide pullies
change as they had a lot of play in them. It might be worth having these
checked at the same time. They were £150 for the set of three. The timing
belt change was the same price.

If you get it done as part of a main service then you can save some of the
labour costs as they have to take off the inlet manifold to change the rear
spark plugs. (remember to get them to change the inlet manifold gasket at
the same time). It's not related but there is so little room that it helps.

As the mechanic said, "It's an expensive engine to neglect". So I guess
yours is over due.

Regards
G

Cambelt replacement seems to be a scheduled service with Pugs. But
poking through Haynes, this group and other sources throws up
conflicting information on when it should be done (and whether the
tensioner should be replaced as well).

Haynes say nothing about the V6 but say 72k miles (115km) for other
engines. In this group 160k km has been quoted as the recommended
interval with, as i say, some controversy about the tensioner.

Does anyone know what the recommended intervals are for the various
engines?

Tensionners should be changed at the same time. I've seen and heard of many
cases of tensionners which were worn a few hundred miles after the new belt
was fit (which means another belt replacement, if not head / valves).

In theory should be written in the servicing handbook's provided with the
car... BUT information may change with years & belts technology : for
example first XUs were given for 80,000km then a belt tech upgrade (to HSN,
which is 3rd generation, IIRC) makes it jump to 120,000km (or 5 years, this
hasn't changed).
Better thing is ringing at Pug's to know - they sould have the most recent
specs.

My 2001 210bhp V6 engined 406 Coupe, lists the exact service items and
intervals in the Owners Manual.

Service interval is 2 years / 20,000 miles, spark plugs are every second
service (ie, 4 years, 40,000 miles) and the cambelt is specified every
fourth service (ie, 8 years, 80,000 miles).

Note that this will NOT be the same for the earlier cars with the one-year
service intervals.
