The newer version of the auto box can in fact be checked quite simply.
If you remove the filler cap, which you will find under the bonnet (top
left corner of the engine bay on my 3.0 V6), you will be able to see
how full the reservoir is. It shouldn't be up to the top, but it should
be visible. If its tacky and discoloured (i.e. dark), then its old
fluid and may not be giving proper protection.
BUT, your gearbox should be sealed for life, meaning that any leakage
is a problem that is not easily resolved. Topping up, were it
necessary, would only be masking that problem for the short term. I'd
get down to a garage if you think there's an issue.

I think that is the power steering fluid reservoir not the gear box!
