Depends what year it is as to what gearbox is fitted!!

Early cars with a straight up and down shift lever, conventional type
auto box (cable controlled) will have a dipstick at the front of the
gearbox.

Later type cars with a wiggly shift lever and the sport and ice modes
(electronicly controlled) you will have to go to a dealer, caus as far
as I know you can only check this on a machine.

But some clever clogs may know a way around it!!

The newer version of the auto box can in fact be checked quite simply.
If you remove the filler cap, which you will find under the bonnet (top
left corner of the engine bay on my 3.0 V6), you will be able to see
how full the reservoir is. It shouldn't be up to the top, but it should
be visible. If its tacky and discoloured (i.e. dark), then its old
fluid and may not be giving proper protection.
BUT, your gearbox should be sealed for life, meaning that any leakage
is a problem that is not easily resolved. Topping up, were it
necessary, would only be masking that problem for the short term. I'd
get down to a garage if you think there's an issue.

I think that is the power steering fluid reservoir not the gear box!
