Hi,
My 2001 406 sometimes shocks, then the sport and snow lights starts
flashing, there display shows 'Automatic gear fault', and the gear box
is stuck in third gear. If I turn off and start the engine, it seems OK.
It might be weeks between this happens, or it might be several times
in a few minutes.
My Peugeot dealer had never heard about problems with the automatic
transmission(!). They've upgraded the transmission software, and this
didn't solve the problem.
Is there a simple solution to this problem, or is replacement or
overhaul of the transmission necessary? (I've seen something about
replacing one or more valves, but not which valves or how complicated
this operation is).
Best regards,
Tor

Hi
I have a 2003 307 Wagon.
I bought it about 15 months ago as a 'demo' model -with only 8000 km on the
clock. Soon after getting it, it kept producing the 'Automatic Gear Fault'
display, and it obviously had a problem - it would hesitate/shudder around
55/65 kmph as though the auto transmission couldn't decide which gear to
engage.
The transmission was replaced under warranty - the diagnosis had something
to do with the 'torque detector' (I think that was the name given to the
problem!)
However, just recently, several times the 'Automatic Gear Fault' warning has
again been displayed - this time after decelerating or accelerating at slow
speeds - sometimes with an audible 'clunk' or shudder.
I am due for a 40000 Km service in a week or so, but would like to have some
idea of what is likely to be the cause. It is now just over 12 months since
the first transmission/gearbox was replaced. Would this be under a separate
warranty from the car warranty which has now expired, and is it likely that
any repair/replacement would be free of charge?

Hi Tor,
I have similar problem as you describe. Since this problem trouble me a lot,
I asked my dealer to solve the problem. The dealear asked me to change my ECU
of the transmission. It is very expence. So I search in Internet. Someone
help me by doing following steps and it works.
Step1: Disconnect the negative wire from your car battery.
Sep2: Disconnect the wires in ECU of transmission.
Step3: Wait for 5 minutes
Step4: Connect the wires back to their postion.
Step5: Connect the negative wire back to your car battery

Hi,
I didn't get to try the simple solution before the professionals got the
job.
The blinking of the S and Ice lamp + the gear stuck in 3rd gear, is the
emergency mode of the gear box. This indicates an automatic gear fault,
but it doesn't state what kind of automatic gear fault.
The diagnose system of my car, indicated a problem with two of the shift
valves. (There are 7 or 8 shift valves). These two valves was replaced,
and this solved the problem. This could be done with the gear box in the
car, but it was quite expensive anyway.
There have been a number of faults with these valves, and Peugeot are
now using a different kind of valves!

Tor
