Red overheating light keeps coming on. Not sure why. Rad is o.k. and the
anti-freeze/water is up to the max line in the measure/overflow/extra bottle
thingy .. so I know that there is enuff coolant in there. Any other obvious
things to check? Am off to get a Haynes manual tomorrow!! Could the temp
sensor be shot to sh.t? Where do I look?

Does the fan thermostat nicely (i.e. switch on and off every 30 seconds), or
does it just stay on?

If it stays on, (with the ac off if you have it) it would indicate the
system really can't get the heat out.

In which case check the coolant circulation thermostat (or just remove it as
a test) and the water pump.

Thanks, will check today. No aircon but when I tried to blow hot air thru
the car to take some of the heat out of the system it didn't seem to be
warm, let alone hot.

O.K. Threatened the engine with new bits from local motor factors and been
out for a 10 mile drive. No red warning light. Very hot air coming from
heating system blower.... who says that cars are only mechanical and can't
be reasoned with???

Will obviously need to check again if problems. Just had the timing belt etc
done so did wonder if the water pump could be the problem. .... just wait
and see methinks.

Thanks for your help IB

Could be the water pump but if it wasn't working you'd overheat the engine
pretty quickly. You may have had an air lock somewhere.
