I've just got this 406 2.0 GLX estate 1998 100k on the clock. When I picked
it up on Wednesday it was fine but since Sunday there's a dreadful eggy type
smell which must be from the cat I suppose. This happens even after 40 miles
down the motorway, to the extent that I have to put the air onto recirculate
when I'm sitting in a traffic jam. I did fill up Wednesday evening and again
on Sunday at the local Sainsburys but their pumps say ultra low sulphur
petrol. Could it be the lambda sensor or O2 sensor? GSF don't seem to list
these in their online catalogue and an enquiry via their contact page brings
a response asking for my chassis number.

I have read that the air conditioning can smell (although I have no idea
what it smells like) and that there is a can of something or other that you
can get in Halfords to treat it.

But it definitely isn't the air con. It comes from outside the car and
increases when you rev the engine.

It must have had the Cat replaced recently - they sometimes smell a bit when
they're new.
Providing your emissions are OK, nothing is broken ! You'll just have to be
patient until it goes away.

Thanks. Does that eggsplain why it didn't smell when I got it on
Wednesday last week? A colleague has also commented that the end of the
exhaust is at the back of the car so why is the smell getting in?

Because of the backdraft. All vehicles produce a backdraft,
if you drive am estate car with the back door open, the
exhaust fumes will be dragged into the car.

But not when stationary which is when I notice the smell. I have seen
elsewhere that there are non-return flaps somewhere at the back of the
car to vent the passenger compartment. Any idea where?

If you pull out the boot trim on the right hand side, you'll find the vent
flap in the inner wing just in front of the lighting cluster.
