Not in Tesco's Sunbury, I've used their diesel since the place opened in the
early nineties and never a problem.   Sludge can be pumped out in any
filling station if the level in their tank gets too low or the tank has just
been filled from a tanker without allowing time to settle.

Well I have used Tesco and other supermarket fuel for many years now, and
never had a prolem.
Interesting that PhilC talks of problems in the West Byfleet Esso station
after it was "taken over" by Tescos. As far as I can see the fuel sold there
is still Esso according to the signs, it's just that there is a Tesco Metro
store there too.
So all this thing about Tesco fuel is actually about Esso?

Yes, Tesco only sell 'Tesco' petrol at their supermarket sites.  Any
other petrol stations marked as being Tesco (eg. Tesco Express) are
actually Esso fuel.  If you note on their "5p off a litre" offers, they
always exclude "Esso petrol at Tesco Express".

It was probably just a coincidence about the fuel contamination and Tesco's
takeover of the site. Although it was a serious enough problem for them to
have the tank or tanks cleaned.
The site is owned/leased and controlled by Tesco's not just the Tesco
Metro -  my original comments regarding the problems Tesco cause their
suppliers is still relevant.

No idea. Very rarely fuel at Tesco.

Sainsbury's Durham though... The stuff they sell as "super" unleaded at
85.9p/litre is rocket fuel.

On a blind test (my dad fuelling my car without me knowing) I guessed the
good stuff.

It's The Tits. At £1.20/tank extra (I drive a 406) it's worth every penny.
