Lost my keys on a drunken Saturday night, got hold of the spare key
(minus electronic fob), works fine when unlocking and locking the
doors of the car (central locking works fine), slips into the ignition
block fine also, but will not let me turn the ignition key round to
start the car. It’s as if the steering lock wont come off. Tried
jiggling the key and the steering wheel about, but to no avail, anyone
have any idea’s? I dont want to be catching Busses for too much
longer! the car doesnt have an alarm to dis-engage, and it shouldnt be
anything to do with the electronic fob because ive started the car
with the old key before without using this feature (when the batteries
in the key had ran out)
Any help much appreciated,
Jordan

Did you ever lock/unlock the doors with the key you lost or did you always
use the remote button? I am wondering whether, prior to you getting the
car, the ignition lock and main key were changed but not the spare.

cheers for the reply! Turns out the problem WAS to do with only using
the remote button to unlock the car [with the old key]. But not for
the reasons you mentioned. because I never used the old key in the
door lock, the lock remained like new (not worn), but of course the
key went into the ignition block allot, so that became worn along with
the ignition block. Since the spare key i got hold of was a duplicate
of a new, un-used key, it had trouble working in the worn ignition
block, hence why it worked in the door but not the ignition! With
determination (and allot of jiggling the key about) it slipped in and
has bin fine since. Thanks anyway! :) :

I have had the same problem with my 406 it is usually solved easily by
moving the steering wheel off normal position and holding it in that
position whilst turning the ignition key
