Hi Sam,
I seem to remember having the same fault on my L reg 306 some years
ago, Chris - cant see how it can be the brushes - the fault being
described is a failure to park on wash/wipe and manual, the motor is
obviously working fine as normal and fast work as expected. Motor
problems would affect the actual operation of the wipers on all
settings (slow, sticking etc)
If I remember right the fault is caused by the relay module which
controls the wipers - circuitry in there makes it able to do a set
number of wipes for the wash/wipe, and a single pass for the manual
mode.
To buy new, this relay is quite expensive, though you may be able to
get one from a scrappies, with the usual risk of whether you can test
it etc.
On the 306, the relay was located somewhere up behind the dash on the
drivers side, accesible by taking off the fusebox cover.
In the end, I didnt bother fixing it - its not an MOT failure, and I
just held the lever down until it had done its wipe (for manual) and
flicked the wipers onto normal mode to park them after a wash wipe.
Bit annoying, but you get used to it..
Cheers
Craig

Failing to park is a problem with the parking contacts in the motor.
it is possible to get at these by disassembling the motor. You might
want to try Googling for a previous thread.

Yes, I got quite adept at parking the wipers manualy too but in the
end I shelled out for a new motor.
