Peugeot 206 (2001) Gearbox problem

Hi,

I was stopped at a red light (put my car into neutral) and when I went
to take off again and I put my car into 1st gear, but for some reason
it didn't click in. I tried a number of times and it still didn't
work. I had to eventually take off from 2nd gear (all other gears
including reverse were working at the time). I had to turn off the
engine and start again when it finally worked.

Has anyone had this problem? Is it a computer problem or a gear box
problem? Do I need to take it out to my friendly Peugeot dealer or is
there a simple solution to all this?

I've had this with many different cars in the past (1st or reverse gear
only), just make sure you're in neutral and release the clutch. Then try
selecting the gear again.

It used to be a common problem in the sixties and before when first was a
"crash" gear and synchro mesh was only fitted on second and over.
Releasing the clutch spun the cogs so that they engaged more easily.
Modern gear boxes have synchro on first as well but the main benefit is when
changing down to first (you no longer have to double declutch), on pull away
everything is still stationary and a spin will help them engage easily.
