After farily long drive and within 300 meteres of home, the pug
suddenly started sounding like a lawn mower / knackered challenger
tank, combined with a loss of power.

No fluids appear to have leaked - oil fine (had new oil and filter
last month) / coolant still present.

No obvious damage in Engine bay (ie leaking pipes etc)

No warning lights come on.

Gearbox working as normal.

It is 1999 GLX 1.4, has had last year - New crankshaft oil seal, new
head gasket, new stepper motor (idle control valve,) new back box....
all too typical it would seem for this shoddy car... last month oil/
oil filter/air filter/plug change.

However i need to keep it running as will soon be starting a kit car
build and i will require a car in the meantime.

Have had suggested so far - exhaust manifold? or coil pack - firing on
3 cylinders, loss of power, and horrendous noise due fuel entering
exhaust system??

Does it have the same kind of crankshaft pulley as the 406, two parts bonded
together with rubber.   They sound dreadful when they start to break up and
it is not uncommon.

thanks reply, had mechanic round this morning and was fearing the
worst.... was acutually surprisingly simple - spark plug had come
loose under the ignition pack and thus loud noise was engine trying to
combust and loss of power obvious... another lovely new set of bosch
plugs and running a treat
