Got a 2003 406 2L petrol estate with 45k on it. Would you recommend
servicing 20,000 miles after the previous one (as the book says) or when the
computer says? (It'll have done about 18,000 at that point)

Thanks

We always service before the computer says. then its all done. as long
it has had done what it should have done it should be all ok.

I don't see a lot of point in having your service done before it's due, it
just means that the serving interval gets shorter and shorter, I normally
start arranging mine when the computer tells me I have a 100 miles to go. I
have a 406 diesel estate on a 02 plate. I also use a private garage owned by
an ex Peugeot mechanic, my last service a month ago cost me £98.00. a bit
different to a Peugeot dealer.

I'm not suggesting getting it done before it's due, but asking whether you
go by the service interval or by the compter?
20.000 after the last service is 49,500. It has currently done 47,600 and
the computer is saying service due in 600 miles.
Not having had a car with a computer before, it hasn't been a problem in the
past.

I can see the logic in having a computer suggest that a service is due
depending on how the car has been used, but how reliable is its decision
making considering that the external temperature gauge constantly reads 6
degrees low?

The outside sensor is in the wing mirror on my 406 and has been inaccurate
due, I think, to having the mirrors folded in and out in our narrow parking
spaces at work. Probably a broken wire. Anyway perhaps the computer has
detected a condition which will need rectifying at a service, like water in
the fuel filter (ok a diesel issue I know).
