Our 1990 Peugeot 205 Diesel suffers from severe water ingress every time it
rains heavily. The water appears in the rear footwells, but I just cannot
see how it is getting there. Has anyone els had similar problems?

Check all the drainage holes in the sills/underbody are not blocked.  IIRC
there are 2 in the front wheel arch, one underneath at the front, 1 in the
reart wheel arch and maybe another underneath.

I had exactly the same problem. Doing what Carl suggests solved it straight
away - although the drying out process took quite a lot longer!
