I have a 1995 (N) 405 GTX turbo diesel with an intermittent tachometer
problem. The tacho usually works from cold for about 10 minutes, then it
starts faltering then it stops working altogether.

Any ideas please?

Usually, it's the TDC/rev counter sensor on the gearbox. Located just
above where the O/S drive shaft goes into the gearbox, bolted to the
engine, but pointing toward the flywheel. One 10mm bolt. Not easy to
get to without a ramp!!
