I need a new back box for my 4 1/2 years old (23k miles) 1.4 206 GLX, and
have been told that if when the back box is removed the centre section joint
with it is corroded, it will cost me ?270 (Pug Express fit price). This is
because although the back box would only be ?69.99, the centre section
includes the Catalytic converter at the other end. (which is probably
perfectly OK).

Thanks very much Peugeot for carefully designing the exhaust system to
provide max profit when new exhaust system parts are needed! I have asked
them to tell me before they separate the exhaust if they think it will be
the top price as I will then go down the road to National tyres who have
quoted a lot less with a 2 year warranty.

This is true, but the good news is they(Peugeot) and other exhaust/motor
factors now do a insert/repair section that allows a middle section to be
attached to the existing cat. This part cost about ?15. I suggest you
consult another dealer as this place is trying to rip you off.

That is not true.  There are some good ones and remarks like that don't help
them.

Ron, this is so true. I get fed up with people tarring us all with the
same brush.

Hi Folks,
When I said "this place" I was referring to the particular place he was told
about the expensive replacement, not all dealers or why would I say consult
another dealer.... Hope I'm not getting the flack.

I had a similar thing with a 206GTI which was one of the earliest to need a
new rear box, I got "Smiley" to fit the partial system rear box which
Peugeot claimed was unobtainable. For all the dealers / garages who complain
about being tarred with the same brush there are plenty of customers like me
who find Pug dealers pretty appalling. The solution is not to moan about
what the customers say but to make sure that the bad dealers ones don't get
away with what they do. I'm on my fifth Pug and its probably going to be my
last, I did not find Peugeot trying to extracting an extra ?200 for an
exhaust funny. Neither do I think its less than accidental that they
initially send out vehicles with "one piece" systems, it's very hard to
think anything other than they are ripping folk off at the time when Peugeot
will get most of the exhaust work.

The sooner that legislation is passed to force the likes of Peugeot to fit
flanges to systems the better. Perhaps its about time that the environmental
organisations start to look at what Pug are doing and give them the
publicity they richly deserve, its outrageous that catalysts are being
changed for no reason, the cost to customers and the environment is
unforgivable.

I have had both Rover and Vauxhall that fit one piece systems from new !!
Its all to do with time and money on the assembly line
