tilt bowl for 86 T/A

how hard is it to replace a tilt bowl on a 3rd gen T/A? I was told by a
friend its not hard to install, but you have to be careful. Or, is it better
to replace the whole steering column?

I called a junkyard, and they said I had to take the whole column.

It probably would be easier to swap out the column. I can see why they want
to sell the whole thing as a unit. If they didn't they'd end up with a bunch
of stripped columns that nobody would want.

Depends how good you are with that kind of work. It's pretty detailed work, but
can be done.

Back in the day when most of these cars got stolen, you'd do a ton of them and
the dealers easily stocked most parts. Many of the GM cars and trucks used the
same parts in the 80's.

The bowl was often damaged by a thief trying to acces the actuator rod for the
ignition switch to get the vehicle started.

Swapping the column isn't a bad idea but you may get a junky column from a
yard, or one where the tilt bowl is loose and you have to dismantle it anyhow.

Yeah, I just did the same thing for my '88... wasn't really that hard to to
actually.What took a little bit of time was swapping out the ignition
switches (fed ex broke that in shipping) so in actuality I got the entire
column for 5 bucks.. They have a really good claim service....:)
