looks like with the fridgid weather over the past few weeks my t/a is having a
hard time starting. it is carburated and has a little more compression but is
there anything i can do to ease the pain?

Having the same trouble here...I'm thinking it's something
simple...probably a bad choke thermostat, or possibly a crack in a vac line
somewhere, as I did get the valve seals done this summer, but as yet, I've
not found the source of MY woes with any certainty either. I'm also running
a standard 4 bbl Rochester...so yes....I feel your pain.
One possibility that comes to mind is that aluminum foil heat riser...if
that's got holes in it, the breather might not open up properly, or warm the
air enough before it floats into the carbs...could also be the breather
valve itself, but doubtful, as I seem to recall when they go, they tend to
shut down after you've BEEN running a while...basically chokes it for air
and it floods on ya...as you roll down the (*@#in highway!

Which carburetor? What mods? Who set it up? How was it it set up? How does it
run otherwise?
Define "hard starting"? Cold? Hot? Excessive cranking? etc, etc, etc.

Its a 355 with a street avenger carb (holley) 770 cfm, 230/236 comp cam .490
lift 10.75-1 compression, hard starts by excessive cranking. it is set up to
drive on the street i dyno tuned it at the end of summer to 404 hp 425 ft
torque. Thanks.

The Holley is the first problem, because they are collosal pieces of crap for
the street over a Q-jet. Most Holleys "overcarb" the engine. Holley carburetors
are notoriously pesky on a street application like that.
How is the choke working? Does it start up fine when warm? If so, I'd look into
choke issues.
A tuned Q-jet would make that thing sing AND idle as it should :).
